As a member of The Wildlife Society’s International Wildlife Management Working Group, I’ve had the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what wildlifers across the United States are doing to build connections with professionals and students abroad. Part of this opportunity included the honor of conducting an interview with Dr. Jerrold Belant, a former professor at SUNY ESF who has spearheaded numerous research projects on human-wildlife conflict and population and habitat ecology in many different areas of the globe. He has also been involved with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and served in a leadership capacity with a number of other international organizations. During the interview, I asked Jerry questions related to challenges of working internationally, what we can learn from wildlife biologists in other countries, and why maintaining a global perspective in conservation is important.
