Yet another enjoyable class I took at the University of Arizona was a Wildlife Conservation Behavior course (WFSC 447). This topic is the application of knowledge of animal behavior to solve conservation issues. The major project of the semester was to create an ethogram, which is an inventory of a species’ behavior, including descriptions and time budgets (i.e. amount of time spent performing each behavior). These recorded observations were then used to answer a conservation question of our choosing in a scientific report. I worked with four other people to study the giant pandas in the Smithsonian National Zoo by using their 24/7 live cameras. The report is attached below, though my colleagues’ names have been removed for the sake of privacy.
